"Ash" is our home bred half Czechoslovakian Wolfdog with a Tamaskan type sire (DEFRA declared his parents to be of Tamaskan type). The purpose of this cross was to give me a dog with Czechoslovakian Wolfdog appearance but with the laid back, easy going temperament of the sire and I feel I have achieved this aim with "Ash". He is a very quiet, gentle dog; intelligent and keen to please. He is submissive and steers clear of trouble in the pack, but is inseparable from his playmate "Magic", who he adores and they play chase for hours on end. He has been DNA tested for DM and we are delighted that he is "clear". He is going to be a big dog and hopefully he will grow into those ears! He has sired three stunning litters and we are currently awaiting the birth of three more litters that he has sired for the Anglo Wulfdog breeding programme. I am sure that he will be a great asset to the programme. He is maturing nicely and I would like to point out that the pictures on this page are somewhat out of date and more recent photos will be added soon. "Ash" has stamped his mark on the Anglo Wulfdog breeding programme and most of his offspring look just like him! He has been semi-retired as a stud dog while I get a few more outcross generations into the programme, but he may well be used again in the future. Recent advances in DNA technology have enabled me to discover the true breeds in "Ash's" make up. I know his mother "Quest" is a pure Czechoslovakian Wolfdog and is 22% Grey Wolf 78% GSD, but "Ash's" sire "Zephyr" was a bit of a mystery and I only had "Zephyr's" breeder's word for what his parents were. I was therefore surprised when I got "Ash's" Embark test results and his breed make up can be seen at the bottom of the Health Test results page. "Ash" was retired from breeding after it was discovered that some of the male pups he produced went on to develop epilepsy. Although it's possible there were other causes, such as the Lepto 4 vaccination that was given to his pups at the time (I no longer use Lepto 4 but Lepto 2 instead which is safer) I couldn't risk the possibility that there was a genetic link (unfortunately there isn't a test for this health condition). "Ash" enjoyed his retirement and spent his time with his mum "Quest" and his life long friend "Magic". The three were inseparable. He was a lovely gentle giant (but did have a dislike for "Bracken" my GSD and even in old age still bore a feisty grudge against him). |
"Ash" passed away peacefully in his sleep aged 11, curled up next to his mum. This was totally unexpected and a terrible shock. Whatever was wrong he was very stoic and hid it from us all, although a couple of weeks previously he didn't want to go into his own cage anymore but chose to go in with his mum (much to her annoyance) and in hindsight this was probably the first sign that something wasn't right. The day he died he ate his early morning treats but later that morning didn't want to go outside. It's really hard coming to terms with his sudden death. He was a very loyal, gentle giant and I shall never forget him - especially the way he saved his mum's life when she got out of her depth in the sea - as soon as he saw she was in difficulty he bravely dived straight into the water, getting behind her and gently pushing her into the shallows. He also took it upon himself to protect me from the same fate by walking between me and the sea, gradually pushing me up the beach away from the water. I still can't believe he's gone - his mum "Quest" was devastated, especially as she'd been with him and saw him fade away and had to step over him to get out of her cage. She spent two weeks frantically running around the garden looking for him. "Magic" had been born within a few days of "Ash" and they'd been best friends all their lives. "Magic" isn't well and seems to have given up since losing her buddy - I really thought she'd be the first to go and I don't think she'll be around much longer. Run Free big boy - you left a wonderful legacy in your sons and daughters and I still feel you walking by my side. (I will add the last pics taken of "Ash" when I feel up to doing it). |
